If you’ve never trained a dog before, you are probably eager to find some solid, helpful dog training tips. Here are some great tips to start you out on the right foot.

A dog’s name should only be used when positively interacting with the animal. Call the dog’s name to get him to come to your side or call his name when you are serving his dinner. Don’t, however, call your dog’s name when you are unhappy with his or her actions. The dog would negatively associate that with punishment.

Don’t interact with your dog when you are frustrated or angry. Simply put your dog up and take a break. Training will proceed much more efficiently when you return. Each of you will be rested, have a fresh outlook, and be ready to tackle that seemingly elusive training task once again.

When interacting with other dogs, expect a calm, sedate attitude from your pet before letting them go loose. By establishing a calm demeanor in your pet, you will cause a ripple effect through the other animals as well as teaching your dog that you control the environment. This will make it easier to withdraw your dog when it is time to go as well.

Next time your dog jumps up on you in excitement, tell them “Off” in a firm (but not angry) voice, gently push them off, and turn your back. The verbal command and action of moving them reinforces what the command means, and turning restricts their access to you. This accomplishes two things: a) your dog can’t jump on you anymore, b) your dog feels he loses your attention, which is the exact opposite of what he wants. This teaches him quickly not to jump on you.

If your dog tends to chew on your shoes or other household items, you can stop this behavior by giving the dog a yummy substitute, such as a raw hide bone, to chew. The dog will likely abandon your shoes in favor of the raw hide, as the only reason he or she is chewing your shoes is that he or she is bored and needs something to do.

Make sure you are feeding your dog high-quality food. Behavior problems are often caused by a poor diet. High-quality dog food has human-grade ingredients and an expiration date. Making sure your dog eats plenty of protein and avoid giving him “junk” food from the table. A well-fed dog is a happy, obedient dog.

Yelling at your dog to stop him from barking can be very ineffective. Instead, try talking calmly to him, and teach him a word that he will associate with quiet. Yelling, to your dog, sounds like you are barking right along with him and so, it can further encourage him to bark.

When training a dog it is very useful for the dog’s owner to do some research into training. By learning how to train a dog the proper way one will make their job much easier. It can be done the most effective way and be the easiest for both the owner and dog to adjust too.

Create an environment that is learning-friendly for training sessions. Remove distractions such as children, TV or anything else that may pull focus from you. Young children love to help but they can be your biggest hindrance in the process. When distractions are removed you will not have to constantly redirect your pet, and this allows for easier learning.

Using a loose leash is key when you are training your dog to accept a leash. Dogs like to explore new places when they are out on a walk. Their eagerness will cause the leash to be strained. If you know what you are doing then you will train them to walk on a leash with slack.

A good dog training tip is to have your dogs meet at a park if you plan on bringing a new dog into your home. By having the dogs meet at the park, the dogs will be more friendly with each other, and it’ll take dominance out of the equation.

Your house shouldn’t be like doggy prison. Your dog should have a wide variety of social interactions daily. This will ensure he’ll continue to blossom as a social animal, and he’ll be able to use up some of his energy meeting all these exciting new people and dogs. You’ll both benefit from the experience.

Consistency is one of the keys to successful dog training. Keep the commands simple to understand so that everyone can use them consistenly with your dog. Make sure the whole household is being consistent with training cues. A dog will get confused if the reward does not always come after a good deed.

If you have a large-breed dog, he needs a big bed on which to stretch out. You could get a rectangular bed designed specifically for large dogs or, better yet, a standard crib mattress. This may be beneficial as you are able to replace covers simply by adding new crib sheets. Crib mattresses are also waterproof, which is another big advantage.

Fetch is a great way to teach a dog you’re the boss. If you ever pick the ball from up where your dog dropped it, then your canine friend will think he is the alpha. Have the dog bring you the item or else you’ll stop playing with him and you’ll be the leader of the pack again.

When you are training your dog, do not blame it for bad behavior if it is sick. You should never force a dog to do obedience training when it is not feeling well. Take your dog to the vet to see what is making it sick, and put off the training until it is doing better.

Good dog training can teach your dog everything from basic behavior modification to advanced trick mastery. After following these tips, you will no longer be new to dog training, instead you will be on your way to becoming a dog training expert.
